The transport of dangerous goods is a sensitive activity, governed by strict regulations to ensure the safety of people, property, and the environment. If you are a transporter, shipper, or logistics operator, you have surely heard of the ADR.

What is the ADR?
The ADR (European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road) is a regulation adopted in 1957, and applied in more than 50 countries, including the European Union. Its main objective is to set common rules for the safe transport of dangerous goods on roads.
Dangerous goods are classified into 9 categories, including:
Flammable gases.
Combustible liquids and solids.
Corrosive or toxic substances.
Why is it important?
The ADR protects:
People: drivers, locals, and personnel handling the goods.
The environment: prevention of leaks and chemical accidents.
Businesses: reduction of financial and legal risks through strict compliance.
What are the main challenges to overcome?
1. Master the regulations
The content of the ADR evolves regularly. Companies must stay informed of changes to avoid mistakes.
2. Train the teams
Drivers of vehicles transporting dangerous goods must undergo mandatory ADR training, tailored to the types of goods handled.
3. Ensure vehicle compliance
Each vehicle must be equipped and checked before each loading:
Fire extinguishers, ADR signage (orange boards), personal protective equipment (PPE).
Mechanical condition of the vehicle to avoid any technical incident.
4. Manage the documentation
The management of ADR transport sheets and other mandatory documents can quickly become complex. Any error or absence of document can lead to penalties.
What are the risks if non-compliance occurs?
Non-compliant transport can have serious consequences:
Human and environmental risks: accidents, fires, contaminations.
Financial and administrative sanctions: fines, suspension of activity, or even legal proceedings.
Damage to reputation: poor management can tarnish the company’s image with clients and partners.
For example, a roadside check revealing equipment deficiencies or poor documentation can cost the concerned company several thousand euros.
